Jail Trail

Just off of Main Street in Old Town, the Jail Trail cuts through a dense Cottonwood riparian area, through a rocky floodplain, and follows the Verde River for about a mile where you can continue on to Dead Horse Ranch or loop back to Old Town.

Verde River

With evidence of occupation and agriculture from 8,000 to 10,000 years ago, the Verde River is an important resource to Cottonwood – with mesquite bosques, cottonwood gallery forests, bands of riparian willows, and a variety of native fish species.

Dead Horse Ranch State Park

Covering 423 acres in the Coconino National Forest, Dead Horse Ranch stretches six scenic miles of the Verde River that is perfect for canoeing, swimming, or wading gently in the cool water with campgrounds for novice and experienced campers.
